Travel Fun!!

My son’s school travel club is planning a trip to London and Paris next year and he’s going! While he’s in London, he’ll be seeing
The Strand
Trafalgar Square
Leicester Square
Covent Garden
Big Ben and Houses of Parliament
Piccadilly Circus
St. Paul’s Cathedral
Changing of the Guard at Buckinghan Palace
Westminster Abbey
I’m so excited for him! I’ve ALWAYS wanted to go, so I’ve told him that he needs to write in a diary every day - even if he’s too tired.
Do you have any tips or things to look for while he’s there?
I spent four years in Europe and even more than the castles, cathedrals and palaces, I remember some of the old houses that people lived in over three hundred years ago. Seeing these homes that were built in the 1600’s can be amazing and an eye opening experience.
Wow, he’ll have a great time - can’t you go too as a volunteer helper??!!
Tips? - I’d suggest you buy him a money and passport wallet which he can wear round his waist under his clothes - especially in Leicester Square and Covent Garden. And a small padlock for his backpack (with a combination lock so he can’t lose the key!).
As for things to look out for - what kind of things is he into?
Is he interested in military stuff? If so, the Imperial War Museum and The Duke of Wellington’s home (called No1 London) might be good?
Or if he’s into art, then definitely the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery (both in Trafalgar Square).
or theatre? Then there’s Shakespeare’s Globe on the South Bank of the Thames.
Or if he likes history more generally, then the British Museum is fantastic. As is the Natural History Musuem. And the Science Museum… (As you can tell, London has lots of museums and galleries!)
Or maybe he likes music? He could visit Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, or the places where the Stones and the Beatles recorded their albums.
Or sport? Maybe the Oval or Lord’s for the Cricket, Twickenham for the Rugby or Wembley for the football (soccer).
He’ll have the time of his life!
Tell him not to eat in any chains that he recognises - ! That way, he’ll experience great london food.
Camden Market is always a great experience.
You guys are great!!! Those are wonderful suggestions and just make me even more excited for him!
I don’t think I want to go as a chaperone - this will be a sort of grown-up thing for him to do that he can do all on his own. I think just the whole idea of it has changed him a bit - he’s holding himself a little higher, you know what I mean?
I’ll just have to come to England myself some day. Like I’ve said before, I’d love to be Bridget Jones for a week. I would do ALL of the things Truce suggested. Plus a lot of shopping!
